… or „Music makes the people come together.“ Madonna got to the heart of it all: there is nothing that connects people faster than music. It helps us to be happy and sometimes carries us over painful experiences. It awakens so many memories in us and lets us dream of new adventures. Music endows us with emotions, and at times it is a bit too profane. Just as the fancy takes us, it takes us to any given state of mind or fades into the background like a shy being.

Not only an art form but a physical phenomenon

Musik is composed of tones and sounds – organized sound events, so to speak – turning into melodies by their arrangements, chronology, and speed. Different sound levels, intensities, and durations make every tone unique and special. Many of those tones combined to create a polyphony and correlating sounds create a harmony. These specifics offer musicians endless space for creativity: if you listened to the work of the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen you probably know a thing or two about that.

The physical toolbox offers the base for various symphonies and songs. A year ago the music streaming service Spotify offered over 38 millions of songs in their stock. When you think about the first references to music date back to 35.000 years ago the possibilities of combining sounds, tones and rhythms seem to be infinite.

Why do we like music

Why do we react to music and why does it make us dance in happiness at times while at other times it leaves us stone cold? Looking at the human brain, there is no such thing as a particular room or part for music. It’s instead the whole brain that is affected by music on plenty levels – by which music is directly connected to our emotions. Already in our early childhood, we build a relationship to music. We can feel it the same way as stories of our parents or colors and shapes we face in our everyday life. When we are eight years old, all cornerstones are set to acknowledge harmonies completely and from this moment on the development of our own likes and dislikes evolves. What we listen to is related to many things: our social environment, our parents and friends taste, our attitude towards life our heritage. It’s a development that is never wholly finished which allows us to always have an open mind towards new harmonies. May we introduce: a new Idol „Johann Sebastian Bieber“!

On the digital highway: Ear-Pods and Streaming

Here we go again: Digitalization. Music is an industry that profits a lot from it or is at least strongly influenced. It’s not only changing the way professionals create music but also the way we consume it. Times are almost over in which we loitered in front of the record store waiting for the newest vinyl to drop. Safe to say for some years we’ve been seeing a resurgence of the vinyl, but most of us comfortably stream everything we like – at home, on the commute or during sports – streaming services sustainably changed the music industry. Our research is dictated by algorithms and now longer by our almost romantic willingness to dig through the shelves. It’s sad in a way as music loses a bit of its charm but at the same time streaming is just so handy. These are simply the times we live in.

© Left: Westend61 / Kike Arnaiz – © Right: Westend61 / Bonninstudio

At the same time, Digitalization offers new ways to learn about music. Talented musicians upload youtube tutorials to make music more accessible to everyone that wants to be able to play their favorite tune on the piano or guitar. Musicians become famous via Soundcloud and no longer have to wait for that one producer to maybe listen to their demote. In a way, music became so much more open to everyone and offers us more possibilities than ever. Like the musical metaphysic, Madonna used to say: „Music makes the People come together. Music makes the Bourgeois and the Rebel.“
