The efficient use of digital data volumes is a core feature of a networked society. Artificial intelligence (AI) is being applied successfully in more and more areas. But the “robot colleague” also divides opinion. Enthusiastic supporters, who primarily emphasize the positive aspects of AI, are opposed by skeptics, who warn of the dangers of a robot dictatorship. In any case, the responsible harnessing of “intelligent” machines by humans presupposes agreement on and compliance with ethical standards. Regardless of undeniable risks regarding data protection issues and misuse as an instrument of manipulation, AI harbors many opportunities and advantages. It can not only make our everyday lives easier in the 21st century, but also make entire societies more crisis-proof.

Opportunities and benefits (and limitations) of artificial intelligence

Uncritical acclaim for AI and Big Data is just as unhelpful as one-sided demonization. We should approach the subject with an alert mind and our eyes wide open as well as with composure. And sometimes even with two primal human qualities that even the best computer will never have: humor and common sense! Then we will realize not only what AI can be good for, but also where its limitations lie and how strictly we should rein it in. One thing is clear: Humans must remain the boss. The Joseffson Collective has expressed this beautifully in this image. The cheerful woman may be holding a cable harness to her head, but she doesn’t at all give the impression that she’s letting anyone control her thinking.

The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the vulnerability of highly complex modern societies. It also showed how important and effective the rapid aggregation and analysis of huge amounts of data can be in averting dangers and getting crises under control. The core healthcare sector is undergoing a process of digital transformation. This includes the individualized optimization of patient care through the lively exchange of digital data. But Big Data and AI are also being used in industry, environmental protection, energy management, and many other areas. This harnessing of digital data for the common good comes across well in this image from Infinite Lux. You can clearly see that the man with the tablet has just taken a step forward in his project. And the tablet he is holding has certainly not taken away his autonomy, but merely made his work easier.

The use of AI and Big Data for general benefit presupposes a responsible, and at times also restrained and critical, handling of data. In the first place, more transparency must be demanded from Internet providers: What happens to the user data that we all make available to them? All too often, this is done too thoughtlessly, which is why every single user should reflect on his or her behavior in virtual space. The ultimate responsibility for who gets my data lies with me!

Data protection, security on the Internet, and transparency are important issues, not only for private users, but also for corporate and government networks. This photo from Clique Images sums up the issue nicely. This technician seems to be asking himself, “Which beautiful blue cable goes where?” – a question we should probably all ask ourselves a little more often.

AI in brand communication

AI and Big Data as side effects of the Internet age are important trends. And that makes them strong material for good images! The applications are various: digitally working companies, high-tech applications of any kind, manufacturing industry, science & research, market research, medicine, pharmaceutical industry, to name a few. The interaction and the many interfaces between human and artificial intelligence offer a lot of creative potential for exciting motifs.
