Lisa Tymokhina (40) impressively demonstrates that stock photography is anything but \u201coff-the-shelf.\u201d The former scientist brings a unique precision and symbolism to her work\u2014inspired by Ren\u00e9 Magritte and her past as a cave explorer. In this interview, she gives us an in-depth look at her daily work routine in Kyiv, explains her streamlined workflow, and reveals why authenticity remains the greatest asset in the age of AI.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

We noticed that you are very good at working with light. Your images are not only strong in content, but also very high quality from a technical point of view.So our first question: Can you tell us in two sentences who you are as a person and how you started with photography?<\/strong><\/em>
Thank you so much for having me and for your high appreciation!
I\u2019d describe myself as an explorer at heart – with a camera:) Before moving into stock photography, I worked in science – specifically karstology (the study of caves). This work included many expeditions, where I started to take pictures of nature and learned how to shoot in caves using flash – technically challenging, but fascinating. Feeling like a small human in a vast underground space deeply inspired me. I\u2019m still drawn to exploring the relationship between people and their surroundings – even in lifestyle photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did you discover stock photography, and how did you find Westend61?<\/em><\/strong>
Over time, photography captivated me beyond a hobby, leading me to study it and explore new directions. I found a local photography club where I learned about stock photography and uploaded my first works to microstocks in 2012. A few years later, seeking further growth, I started researching agencies and was inspired by Vasily Pindyurin<\/a> and his successful experience working with Westend61.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For more than four years now, we have been watching with concern that the war in your country continues, as Russia keeps attacking Ukraine. This must be very difficult for you. We admire even more how you manage to create such great images under these circumstances.What is it like to produce photos in Kyiv today, and how was the situation before the war?<\/em><\/strong>

In 2022, I was just preparing my application to join Westend61. Looking back, that goal and the focus it required really helped me emotionally. When you go to sleep not knowing if your home will still be intact in the morning, you inevitably reassess what truly matters and realize the importance of acting without hesitation. At the same time, there are periods when there is no strength for creativity. Photoshoots are often interrupted by air raid alerts, some locations have been damaged, there may be no electricity for many hours. In these conditions, the support of others becomes especially valuable. Even after sleepless nights caused by the shelling, coming together with my models to work gives us a sense that life goes on. In these moments, very emotional images are born. I am deeply grateful to the people I work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We really like your photographic style. We are especially impressed by your locations and your models. The offices you shoot in are often very special \u2013 with large glass windows, high ceilings, and modern interiors. How do you find these locations, and where do you find your models?And one more question: Do you work alone or with a team?<\/em><\/strong>
Thank you! In stock photography you always have to keep your eyes peeled for interesting faces and settings. Kyiv has so many incredible spots – some are brand new, while others are living a ’second life‘ as repurposed industrial spaces. I\u2019m always online looking for new rental options and models. I prefer working alone – it\u2019s the process that suits me best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have been working with us since 2022, but we feel like your work has really taken off in the last year. Why do you think that is?<\/em><\/strong>
It\u2019s likely a combination of factors. First, I\u2019ve gained a better grasp of Westend61\u2019s specific aesthetic and needs, and I always make sure to follow my editor\u2019s valuable recommendations. I\u2019ve also streamlined every stage of my workflow, from preparation to the shoot itself. And importantly, I\u2019ve found \u201cmy\u201d models – people with whom I share an immediate and easy understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In your images, we often see a subtle sense of humor, which you turn into strong visual concepts. For example, the series with the wired heads, showing mental stress or chaotic thoughts.How do you come up with these ideas, and what inspires you?<\/em><\/strong>
When planning a shoot, I try to balance serious business imagery with something more playful – even absurd. It lets models have fun and reminds the viewer that life is full of diverse, unexpected moments.
I love using symbols and metaphors. My interest in symbolism was influenced by Ren\u00e9 Magritte and surrealism in general, but I can be inspired by almost any visual – from ads to cinema – or even a play on words. A good example is the working title for this series with the wired heads: \u201cTangled in Thought\u201d. It is essentially a self-ironic exploration of how creative people can get exhausted searching for ideas, yet never truly stop the process of creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is there an image you have always wanted to create?<\/em><\/strong>
I\u2019ve always wanted to do a shoot at a solar farm. The visual geometry and its immense scale are incredible, and I think it would be a perfect setting to explore the relationship between technology and nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please show us your favorite image from your Westend61 portfolio and tell us why it is the one you like the most.<\/em><\/strong>
Looking at this photo of an abandoned greenhouse, I reflect on the idea of merging two worlds: the past, where nature dominates, and the future with its technology. Where is the point of contact between these worlds, and what is the role of humanity within it? This is actually one of my favorite themes. I want to believe that one day all wars will end, and human actions will be directed solely toward the development of humanity in harmony with nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice would you give to young photographers who are just starting in stock photography?<\/em><\/strong>
Be bold, look for new ways to express your ideas. Experiment! Don\u2019t copy anyone – feel free to express yourself. And the second thing, equally important in stock photography: embrace planning, analysis, and discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you see the development of AI? Do you think it will replace photography, especially stock photography, in the next years? Or will it be more of an additional tool? Does it worry you, or do you feel relaxed about it?<\/em><\/strong>
I try to look at the use of AI from both perspectives: as a photographer and as a consumer. When using AI, it\u2019s important to clearly understand its application and purpose. Because it is so easy to use, it\u2019s also very easy to overuse it in situations where it shouldn\u2019t be applied. As a photographer, I see new technical possibilities and that\u2019s exciting. But from a consumer\u2019s perspective, I\u2019m convinced that AI will not replace stock photography in cases where it is necessary to build trust with the viewer. High-quality, authentic photography will remain in demand. People need people! If an image is about emotion – about conveying experience and sincerity – artificiality doesn\u2019t help, it actually weakens communication. The viewer senses the substitution, which can create subconscious distrust or rejection.
That\u2019s why my task as a photographer is to stay aware of technological advancements, while continuing to focus on the quality of my images – filling them with realism, honesty, and individuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does working with Westend61 mean to you?<\/em><\/strong>
For me, Westend61 is about moving from mass production to meaningful creativity and lively dialogue. Working with Westend61 means being part of a community that shares my values. I deeply resonate with their focus on authenticity, balance, and finding joy in simple, everyday things. It\u2019s where professional standards meet a very genuine, human atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
