Idyll between the herb bed and the apple tree
Quirky, small-minded, idiosyncratic – Germans and their gardens are often ridiculed. To love sowing and planting seems a bit stuffy to some. At least, that may have been the case for many city dwellers before Covid. But lockdown frustration has now reopened many people’s eyes to the beauty of a well-tended garden. Hand on heart: on our lonely walks, haven’t we sometimes squinted a little enviously at the boxwood avenues and strawberry beds of those who have the proverbial “green thumb”?
In our forced idleness, many of us have rediscovered the beauty of nature on our doorstep. Now we know when magnolias and rhododendrons bloom and how beautiful they can look. We sometimes catch ourselves wishing we could dig in the potato patch or grow beautiful flowers.

The past year has changed the way we look at lush greenery tended by human hands. Gardens are more than just a neatly trimmed business card of the proud homeowner. Above all, they are a colorful playground for recreation, development, and inventiveness.
Limitless design possibilities
The organic is probably the fascination of the garden – the responsibility to be sure our green pupils flourish. Sowing vegetables or planting a bed is both a challenge and a joy. The gardener’s design possibilities are as limitless as those of the photographer. The bed is the studio, and the sunflowers, herbs, and perennials pose as models – always new and beautiful to look at. The combination becomes a creative joy.

Coming together in the flower box
During the Covid pandemic, one’s own garden, no matter how small, became a popular green oasis. This can be seen in “urban gardening.” Those who couldn’t afford an outdoor area simply planted greenery on their balconies or windowsills. Whether it’s indoor mini-gardens, traffic islands converted into flower beds, or the carrot patch in the urban garden, it’s blossoming and blooming everywhere in the midst of concrete and asphalt.

Whatsapp groups mutate into digital allotment garden clubs; picnics in the country-house style are the order of the day; and the upcoming home harvest is proudly announced. There’s no doubt that many people have rediscovered their passion for gardening.
