These images bring security to your communication

We are living in troubled times. The Covid-19 crisis and the war in Ukraine are shaking a basic existential human need: the desire for security. The same applies to many uncertainties that are quite simply part of the life of every individual. But if we want to shape the future positively, we must not allow ourselves to be paralyzed by our fears. Rather, we must learn to deal with the feeling of uncertainty without falling into a state of shock. Every crisis is also an opportunity. It forces us to leave our comfort zones and develop productive energy. This learning of uncertainty competence is an important topic in image communication. Let’s take a look at a few examples.

Uncertainty competence: The source of energy and further development

If we want to lead self-determined lives, we must not only seize and exploit opportunities, but we must also recognize and calculate risks. And if we come to the conclusion that the possible gain exceeds the potential loss, we must also take these risks. In this image, our photographer Eugenio Marongiu has depicted this proverbial “playing with fire” in a very concrete way. You can see right away that the man from the circus knows what he’s doing – and he’s having fun doing it. His message: Dare to do something (…provided you practice a bit beforehand…)! Such an eye-catcher is suitable for many advertising messages that focus on the balance between security and risk in capital investments, for example.

Our monsters often shrink quickly when we look them in the face. Faced with looming difficulties or threats, we can wrap ourselves in a diffuse black cloud of fear and imagine the darkest scenarios, or we can take a firm look at the problem and see it for what it is: the invitation to find a solution and learn. Jamie Grill has perfectly staged this situation in her image. The girl is clearly not feeling well, but instead of cowering under the covers, shivering, she plucks up her courage and looks to see what’s hiding under the bed. And when she does shed some light on the darkness, she’ll find that… maybe it’s just the runaway hamster. The message is clear: Don’t chicken out, but instead look at a troubling situation, grasp it, and then react. A nice vehicle for all messages that have to do with protection, such as insurance.

And, of course, it’s okay to retreat when a situation threatens to overwhelm us – so long as that doesn’t become our basic attitude. Sometimes we need to take refuge in a safe spot on familiar terrain and get the lay of the land from there before we are ready to take on challenges again. Westend61 photographer Joseffson has captured this mix of open-mindedness and skepticism beautifully.

The gesture of the young woman here playfully masking the lower half of her face with her turtleneck signals, “I need a little time to myself right now.” But at the same time, her laughing eyes reveal that this retreat will be temporary only. This image conveys an important aspect of insecurity competence: being ready to act and to take risks, not stumbling blindly into danger, but rather taking care of oneself. After all, everyone needs a break now and then.
