Trend Report 2026 – Because real life is much more exciting: authentic stock photos instead of AI clichés
What makes visual communication credible? Of course, this is a question we at Westend61 are constantly asking ourselves. But it is also a question that is becoming increasingly urgent in view of the growing flood of AI-generated photos. That is why “authentic visual language” is one of the two core topics of our trend report for 2026. We want to show our customers and photographers how they can stand out with images from real life.
A fresh, modern visual language interacts with current social trends. That’s why the second part of our trend report is dedicated to collective basic needs in the face of global uncertainty: the macro trends of security, longevity, and value orientation are important elements of successful visual communication.
Authentic imagery: the human counterbalance to AI perfection

As a countertrend to over-aestheticization, clichés, and artificial perfection, brands, creatives, and consumers are increasingly looking for visuals that enable credible, trust-building communication. What is needed is authentic imagery with a human perspective and a compass of values. “Honesty is the best policy” is not just an old saying, but a basic requirement for trusting human interaction.
This also applies to stock photography: for images to evoke emotions, they must be credible. Trust, transparency, truthfulness, and above all, genuine feelings score higher than stereotypical clichés. We are convinced that authenticity is the decisive factor that sets the creative quality of good photography apart from the artificial perfection of AI-generated images.
Real people, real diversity: How stock photos create trust

What is in demand, then, are human-made photos that show people as deeply human and therefore likable. The conscious portrayal of small imperfections that make up real life counteracts the often overly smooth imagery of AI – and is therefore particularly appealing!
It is important to portray people in their cultural, social, and physical diversity. Stereotyping and clichés are a thing of the past. Accepting the infinite diversity of human existence reflects the reality of modern society. Anyone can be an everyday hero and encourage others.
Security and values: Visual communication in times of global uncertainty

And we need courage in times of global uncertainty. Rapid technological change, wars, attacks on democracy, economic pressure, and the disappearance of supposed certainties combine to create a sense of crisis in many people’s lives. Visual language must respond to this: it must convey security, stability, and reliability.
Sustainability and longevity are becoming more important – especially when the future sometimes seems threatening. Value-based action is in demand. A sense of responsibility for tomorrow’s world is more convincing than ever. In advertising, the aspect of sustainability is becoming increasingly important. Not as lip service, but as a lived and verifiable ethical stance. Good visual storytelling in advertising therefore not only tells the story of a product or service, but also of the transparency, responsibility, and credibility of the processes and people behind it.
Enough talk—seeing is better than reading. If you want to know how exciting the real new (visual) world is, take a look at our new trend report.
