Anything but kitschy: nostalgic picture stories

Security, stability and familiarity are strong basic human needs. This becomes particularly clear in times of crisis: under the impression of general uncertainty, the collective desire for security and orientation grows. Reflecting on the tried and tested and on good times in the past is one way of restoring mental balance. We call this nostalgia – the longing for a past that is experienced as more positive than the present.

This makes nostalgic moods a strong, emotionally charged topic for visual communication. This feeling can be used to attract attention and create a connection with the viewer of an image. Many themes are conceivable for conveying this mood: for example, retro in a wide variety of contexts, outdated technology or the depiction of traditional lifestyles.
The latter is of particular importance: in times of collective uncertainty, people are moving closer together and seeking closeness. So it is no wonder that the traditional family ideal is experiencing a renaissance in today’s highly individualized society. After all, family stands for cohesion, security, belonging, familiarity and stability. Family promises the protection of an intact social environment that you can rely on even in difficult situations. Family is a calming influence and safe haven in hectic times – and thus stands for a feeling of security that many of us desire.

The nostalgia theme also includes activities that bring us back into contact with ourselves because they allow us to calm down and feel content. These are above all simple and original things that people have done at all times and that build a bridge to a past that is perceived as better, for example baking bread, gardening, handicrafts or similar. This is often linked to the aspect of sustainability, another important trend: creating something lasting with your own hands without using up resources.

There are many ways in which nostalgic longing can be portrayed expressively and authentically. It is not about glorifying or idealizing the past. It is about transferring what has been tried and tested and experienced as positive into the present with a contemporary design. The result is a strong message: “You are safe, and things can be as good as they were.”
