An image concept with a future: Photos of healthy ageing

Rising life expectancy and falling birth rates are bringing about a profound change in the age structure of our society. Statisticians assume that the number of over 80-year-olds in Germany will triple by 2050 as a result of ongoing demographic change. At the same time, today’s (and tomorrow’s) pensioners are generally more active, fitter and healthier than previous generations of senior citizens. Many of them are in a better financial position and are keen shoppers, but they are also critical consumers. This makes them an important target group for advertising, but one that needs to be convinced with credible messages. Accordingly, the demand for authentic photo motifs on senior-specific themes in stock photography will remain high in the future.

As the risk of illness and other health restrictions increases with age, it is not only medical and nursing care for older people that is becoming increasingly important in an ageing society, but also the aspect of prevention. After all, a health-conscious lifestyle in younger years is no guarantee, but has been proven to be an important prerequisite for health and quality of life in old age. We are all concerned with the question of what we can do to maintain our physical and mental health, as well as our independence, as far into old age as possible. This ensures that this topic receives a great deal of attention.
Advertising products and services in the broad field of “senior health and medicine” requires authentic, strong images that come across as fresh and appealing. More sensitivity is required here than with other image concepts: Health is an existential, serious topic, and therefore such motifs should always have a positive aura. If possible, they should express a zest for life and fun – pleasant emotions attract more attention than unpleasant ones.

It doesn’t have to be about medical issues in the strict sense; prevention and self-care are just as important so that you don’t have to go to the doctor in the first place. But care is also an important topic and one of the major challenges of social services and participation. At the same time, the digitalization of medicine continues to progress and must be designed in such a way that the growing number of older people can also benefit from its advantages.
These are just a few examples of the numerous aspects of the topic of “senior health”, which offer many approaches for staging interesting and marketable images. However, it is always important to find the right balance between the necessary seriousness and light-hearted, sometimes humorous variations on the theme. And of course, a few wrinkles are allowed: they look more credible than a lifted Blendax grin, as they are traces of a life lived with all the experiences gained along the way.
